Any photo that expresses and meet’s an artist’s creative vision is called an art photo. Art photos are not the same as the commercial photographs and journalism that support stories printed in various mediums (newspapers, magazines, etc). While the target of commercial photographs is pretty clear- selling a service, photojournalism targets to support the documentaries. These are not considered as art photos; these are just the artistic demands of the job.
On the contrary, fine art photography refers to those art photos which are created in accordance with the creative vision of the artist. Art photos express the artist’s perceptions and emotions. There are several interpretations of art photography but the core idea is retained: expressing the imaginative visualization of the artist.
There are some identified genres that define art photography, including portraits, natural landscapes and nudes. The recent two decades have witnessed the rise in the number of art photography exhibitions across the globe. Rather, it’s become in fashion to use prints and frames for art photos too. There are several galleries in India and also abroad that display some fine art photos, created by talented artists. The size of the prints naturally differs, based on the purpose and theme of the photo. Above all, the beauty of art photos is undeniable.

Art photos are considered one of the finest artistic representations and hence, can be staged and lit giving birth to a dimension and adding to the artist’s vision. The introduction of the latest digital technologies, complex cameras and full spectrum photography, the beauty of art photos have only got more and more popular. Artists can include a lot of effects in their art photos, by employing visible light, filtering ultraviolet light as well as infrared. Pictures now actually mean a thousand words to most of the viewers. Artistic photographers are now receiving immense patronage from their admirers.
With such a growth in popularity of art photos, it is not surprising to note that fine art photos are being auctioned annually and that too at soaring prices. However, the general public still prefers paintings over art photos and it would take some time for the ice to break.
Though fine art photos might stand in opposition to commercial and journalism photographs, but nonetheless they often owe a lot to them. There have been multiple situations where these have overlapped and the dividing line between them has been blurred. However, art photos enthusiasts clearly distinguish between them, highlighting the superiority of art photos.
