Indian Artwork

The Elegance of Indian Artwork

India tops the list of nations that hold a distinct image for having contributed to the global arena of art. Globally recognized as a culturally-rich nation, India has held a special image for art lovers throughout the world. Indian artwork is rich in its tapestry of ancient heritage, bearing a 5000 year old culture. Thus, the artwork produced on the Indian subcontinent from about 3rd millennium BC to the modern times is considered as Indian art. A remarkable characteristic of Indian art is the unusually free expression given to voluptuous feelings, backed by a strong sense of design.

Historically, the earliest recorded Indian artwork originated from the Hindu background, which was later replaced by the prominent Buddhist art. It is of great importance to mention that India has been inspired by spiritualism and the mystical relationship between God and man, since a timeless era. This is pretty evident in the earliest of the Indian artworks. Also, Indian artwork was something that flourished in its homeland and also spread across the region and nation. The credit for this goes to the kings who recognized budding talents within their kingdoms, patronized them and left a deep impression of their affinity during their era.

Indian artwork on the Rise
Typically, Indian art can be categorized into specific periods, each reflecting particular religion, and cultural as well as political developments. The ‘ancient period’ lasted from 3500BC to 1200 CE following which the ‘Islamic ascendency’ period began during 1192 to 1757. The years from 1757 to 1947 mark the ‘colonial period’ of India and post 1947 is the ‘Independence and post-colonial period’.

It was in the 2nd century BC that Indian artists produced outstanding cave paintings; the popular Ajanta and Ellora caves in the Deccan jungles of Maharashtra are considered one the famous ancient art galleries. Buddhism that spread towards the South East Asia during that period also left its scars on these paintings. However, understanding Indian artwork is a special art in itself. Properly cognized Indian art represents a mystical outlook of the people and their spiritual connection.

Some of the popular types of traditional Indian arts include the Tanjore paintings (that originated in Tamil Nadu), the Phad painting (a kind of cloth painting), Pichvai (related to life of Hindu deity Lord Krishna), Madhubani (originated in Northern India), Kalamkari (originated in Andhra Pradesh), etc. Additionally, the Mughal art forms, the Rajputana art forms, etc also bore an influence on the elegant Indian artwork.

Indian Artwork Today
The beginning of the 20th century marked a new level for Indian artists, who began to explore new themes, though directly inspired by the rich ancient Indian culture. And today, Indian artists are known for producing some of the most delicate yet bold, magnificent yet humble, and majestic pieces of artwork, attracting several buyers from other countries. The Indian art mart has spread its tentacles to the global scenario, when the paintbrush has become a powerful tool as the pen, to express ideas for passionate Indian artists.

Black and White Photography

Black And White Photography

Black and white photography holds a special fascination for many photographers as well as non photographers. While the catchy colorful designs of regular photographs help the picture to stand out, the ability to do so with black and white photographs depends only in its ability to communicate rather than on its attractive visual representation.  In other words, color images replicate reality while black-and-white images evoke the feeling of reality. When an image is stripped of its color, it becomes an abstract or a feeling for it can no longer represent reality. And it is through these images that truth can be evoked, capturing something beyond reality. There, lies the beauty of black and white photography.

Several photographers across the globe practice black and white photography today and have only set the bar higher for them and the others. Such a photography calls for closer attention to the lighting, composition, context and the perspective. And passionate black-and-white photographers have revealed that the best black and white photos are taken when the photographer purposely sets out with black and white images in the mind.
Black and White Photography, Since Time Immemorial

It is extremely important to note that black and white photography actually marked the beginning of photography and hence will remain close to the hearts of photographers. And technology today, makes it even easier and fun to create such pictures. While back then, early photographers were constrained by the technology of today and thus established monochromatic images, as the standard reference for photography as an art. Thus, the purist form of photography lives in black and white images, to the extent that there remains a core of elitists who believe that black and white photography is ‘true’ photography.

Essentially, black and white photography is nothing but a number of monochromatic forms in a visual art. For many decades ago, this photography governed the scene until color was introduced. It dominated not only the images as photographs, but also the media: television, movies and even computers. It was not until the 17th century that the first photosensitive compound was discovered and thus began the colorful era. However, the resurgence of black and white photography personifies timelessness and authentic beauty.
Color Versus Black And White Photography

Enthusiastic black-and-white photographers easily point out the unique and exceptional features of black and white images. Firstly, they are capable of portraying a number of feelings, aimed more at the darker side of human life, while color photography depicts a different set of feelings, aimed more at the enthusiastic and passionate side of human life. Additionally, black and white photography allows photographers to create a paradoxical scene in their images, something that is extremely appealing today.

In a gist, good photography represents primarily two important features: beauty and the ability to stop time- both of which are abundantly present in black and white photography.

Oil Painting

Paintings are considered one of the most beautiful creations of man, bearing the power to exert a pull on the spectator. And among these, oil paintings personify the beauty of the genre of paintings, as a whole. Simply put, oil painting is the process of painting with pigments bound with a medium of linseed oil. In the recent years, water soluble oil paints have come to prominence, to the extent of replacing the usage of traditional oils as well. These paints contain an emulsifier that permits them to be thinned down by water and even facilitates faster drying.
Oil paintings were very first used by Indian and Chinese painters for Buddhist paintings between the 5th and 9th centuries. However, they did not gain popularity until the 15th century, when it eventually became the principal medium for producing beautiful artworks. It is noticed that great artists and painters preferred oil paintings because it rendered a very realistic output. They looked more attractive and lavish than the paintings created by water colors. Plus, oil paintings also offered long lasting resistance and greater durability.

Creating an Oil Painting

Original oil paintings are invaluable today, bearing great historical importance for they depict the era of the nation at a particular period of time. However, the true beauty behind oil paintings lies in the hard work of the painter. A classic oil painting may take several weeks to months to be completed. Oil paintings are said to consume a lot of hard work simply because it does not dry easily; so, if the artist wants to create his work in layers, he would have to wait for the paints to dry at each layer for weeks. Oil paints comprise of color binders and pigments and oils such as linseed oil, safflower oil, poppy seeds oil and walnut oil are mixed in the pigments. Even the brushes are made up of different fibers to facilitate the right kind of strokes.
It is interesting to note that oil paintings reached their zenith during the period of renaissance, when artists chose wood panels as their base medium. They stretched their canvas on the wooden panel and used a variety of brushes, blades, knives and even fingers, to paint different types of strokes with unique effects. Popular oil painting styles include contemporary oil paintings, Islamic oil paintings, portrait oil paintings, abstract oil paintings, landscape oil paintings, floral oil paintings, still life oil paintings, etc.

Beauty of Oil Paintings Today

Undoubtedly, oil paintings are an astonishing form of art and even today, millions of artists across the globe express themselves through oil paintings. Though, there are more sophisticated tools, colors and brushes available. For instance, the oil colors used are water miscible, so that they can be thinned and also cleaned by water, rather than the conventional method of turpentine. There are thousands of galleries spread across the world, depicting artists’ creation and recreation of mesmerizing oil paintings. Moreover, people adore decorating their homes and offices with wonderful oil paintings. They are also ideal gifts for painting enthusiasts.

Fine Art

What Is Fine Art?

Technically, fine art defines an art form that was developed primarily for the aesthetics rather than for practical application. Today, the arena of fine art has spread its tentacles wide across the globe, engulfing all those who are passionate about expressing themselves and the world in the form of some art. Historically, the five greater fine arts included sculpture, painting, music, poetry and architecture, of course with the minor arts including dance and drama. While today, fine arts include all the visual and performance arts, including calligraphy, photography, print making, conceptual art, collage, etc.

Unfortunately, fine art as a concept has been greatly misunderstood. Most of us think that fine arts refers to the quality of the art, while in reality, it refers to the discipline’s purity. This is particularly why performing arts like the theatre and ballet are also referred to fine arts. Having said that, the concept of what purity of a discipline is comes to be questioned. Aristotle had once quoted that ‘imitation is one of the finest thing in human nature’ which complements our human ability to stay in harmony with regard to nature and rhythm itself.

Thus, fine art is anything whose purity is as close as possible, to being in synchrony with imitation of the human nature. However, this definition can be referred to the field of performing arts only.

What Does Fine Art Enclose?

Fine art comes to include all the two dimensional works such as illustrations, paintings and drawings, comics, fiber art, print making, photography, calligraphy, mosaics and imaging, as well as the three-dimensional art forms such as conceptual art, sculpting, dance, film and theatre, architecture, games and other art forms. Apart from these, the electronic media, western art music, avant-garde music, creative writing and textiles (as in quilt art) are also included in fine arts.

Of course, distinct and unique pieces of art stand out from different artists and their eras, but what makes their creation a ‘fine art’ is its ability to arouse emotions in the viewer. And these emotions can be anything from sadness and misery to joy and extreme ecstasy. On the contrary, if any piece of art cannot evoke any emotion within the viewer, neither positive nor negative, that piece of art cannot be rightly considered a fine art. Moreover, a genuinely fine art evokes an emotion that is absolutely subjective. The greatest of the artistic compositions do trigger almost same responses from the viewer, yet each individual bears a unique subjective interpretation to the piece.

Role of Fine Art in Lives Today

Fine art is one of the best and exceptional forms of expressing oneself and their interpretation of or their reaction to the world around them. However, a creative process such as fine art is equally therapeutic and life affirming. Art therapy and artistic expression through fine arts provides a creative outlet for the youth and is also a viable means of communication. Traumatic events buried within an individual can still be heard through their expression in fine arts and once that is done, a therapist begins working on it. And this is undoubtedly, the most beautiful role of fine art in lives today!

Indian Contemporary Art

Indian Contemporary Art

The tremendously vast scope of Indian art intertwines with its cultural history, philosophies and religions, placing art production and its patronage in cultural and social contexts. There is a strong sense of design which is characteristic to Indian Art and this can be observed in its traditional as well as modern forms.

The Indian contemporary art kicked off in the early 20th century, as a sort of a renaissance under the leadership of the famed Tagore family. Indian artists had begun increasing the forms they used their work, with painting and sculpting holding up its position. However, it found radical new directions in the works of leading artists such as Subodh Gupta, Narayanan Ramachandran, Bharti Kher, Devajyoti Ray and the like. Amongst these popular contemporary Indian artists, some of them were deeply inclined towards exploiting the great Indian heritage and hence focused on the great Indian epics, the murals of Ajanta-Ellora, miniature paintings, etc.

Indian Contemporary Art

Every Indian gallery today, showcases both traditional as well as Indian contemporary art pieces, some of which are audacious and vigorous, yet graceful and sophisticated paintings. They are mainly the manifestations of the myriad art forms. The contemporary Indian art fuses a unique entity reflecting the intuitive and emotions of Indian culture, employed with the soft touch of Indian elegance. The popular contemporary Indian artists include famed names such as Deepak Shinde, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Satish Gujral, Jatin Das, S.H. Raza, Laxman Shreshtha, etc.

Before Indian Independence, the pioneer of contemporary art was Abanindranath Tagore, who incorporated the Chinese and Japanese styles into his work. He was shortly followed by many other Indian painters such as Rabindranath Tagore, Amrita Shergill, Samarendranath Gupta, Jamini Roy, etc, hence developing the Indian Contemporary Style.
Indian contemporary art, today gathers inspiration from all over the world. With several Indian artists migrating to the Western countries, art for them has become a form of expression merging their experiences of their Indian past with their current western culture. Despite this, Indian contemporary art still retains its exceptional ‘Indianness’.
Indian Contemporary Art Market

The current market of contemporary Indian art is booming day by day. There seems to be a phrase floating around the artistic community of the nation. The following facts stand as proofs to the booming contemporary art market in India.
Reports have suggested that art business is presently worth about US $40 billion and ever since the year 2003, the Indian art market has grown at an average rate of 20-30% every year. Yet news that was the highlight of the contemporary Indian art market was the 1980 artwork by an Indian artist that sold at $2500, but reaches a current figure of about $1 million.

Additionally, a recent report of the Fortune magazine revealed that the Indian art market has risen over 485% in the last decade and today, the fourth largest and the most positive art market in the world.
Thus, the Indian contemporary art seems to promise a brighter future for every Indian artist without doubt.
